Addiction Nursing Careers & Salary Outlook

The following article discusses the critical role Addiction Nursing play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.

What We Do

Addiction nurses are registered nurses who have specialized in pain management, as well as behavioral psychology. These nurses are there to support patients undergoing therapy for drug or alcohol rehabilitation, and to teach patients about why it’s important for them to maintain a clean and healthy lifestyle. Throughout treatment, an addiction nurse will monitor pain levels, medication dosages, mental and physical symptoms.

Top 5 Tasks Performed

Addiction nurses regulate and monitor patient treatments as well as administer medications given during the rehabilitation process. They may talk with addicted patients as well as their families about helpful programs that can aid in escaping addiction. Addiction nurses may also educate youths on the dangers of drugs, alcohol and addiction. Providing support, both emotionally and physically for patients undergoing treatment for addiction is another task performed.

Work Environment

Addiction nurses can work in hospitals or private practices, but most work through rehabilitation clinics, or educational facilities. This type of nurse will work in centers or private locations where he or she can be close with patients undergoing rehabilitation treatment. Rehab can be a very touchy and difficult step, and part of this particular nurse’s job has to do with keeping patients calm and willing to start over afresh rather than give into temptation.

How to Become

Addiction nurses must graduate with an associate’s degree in nursing or a bachelor of science in nursing. Although an associate’s degree is acceptable by some standards, most career paths expect a baccalaureate degree. The NCLEX-RN, a national licensing examination, must also be completed. This position requires you to be a registered nurse for a full three years before applying, and you must have a minimum of 4000 hours of experience.

Job Outlook

Registered nurses have a projected outlook of 19% growth by 2022, which is faster than the average growth of most positions across the country. Men and women working in addiction counseling have a 31% growth outlook by the year 2022, so nurses seeking positions within this field should have no problem finding work in their focus. Because nurses have higher healthcare and relevant medical training than a basic addictions counselor, the pay and option for advancement is much higher with registered nurse status than without.

Training & Certification

All registered nurses must pass the national licensing examination to practice their profession. To be certified to work with patients suffering from addictions, nurses must also pass the requirements for becoming a certified addictions registered nurse or a certified addictions registered nurse – advance practice through completion of the examinations set forth by the ANCB, or Addictions Nursing Certification Board.

Min Education Requirements

Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate

Sample of Reported Job Titles

Psychiatric Nurse, Addiction-Care Nurse, Addiction Counselor PRN, Nurse Practitioner – Addiction Medicine, Crisis Services Specialist
