Typography

h1 should be reserved for the page title only. h2 and h3 should be the most often used headers for body copy. h4, h5, and h6 should be used sparingly (if at all) due to their small font size, particularly when viewed in mobile.

  • Body text.
  • Small Text: Use the “small” class to create small body text.
  • Italics: Use the <em> element to italicize text.
  • Bolding: Use the <strong> element to create bolded text.
  • Inline Quotes: Use the <q> element to indicate that the enclosed text is a short inline quotation. This aids in accessibility, as some screen readers will announce where the quoted text begins and ends. Most browsers typically display inline quotes by surrounding the text in curly quotation marks. The <q> element will automatically adjust/nest quote levels when using a quote inside of another quote. The <q> element is intended for short quotations that don’t require paragraph breaks; for long quotations use the <blockquote> element (see the Pullquote section for more details).

Lists

These are our primary ways of creating both bulleted and numbered lists in body copy.

Basic unordered, bulleted list

Use to group related items that don’t need to be in a specific order or sequence. List items are marked with bullets.

  • Basic, unordered bulleted list.
  • A second item in a list.
  • Third item in a list.

Basic ordered, numbered list

Use to group related items that suggest a meaningful sequence, order, or, ranking. Numbering starts at 1 with the first list item and increases by increments of 1 for each successive ordered list item.

  1. Basic, ordered bulleted list.
  2. A second item in a list.
  3. Third item in a list.

Basic unordered/ordered list in columns

Use for lengthy lists (items of 5 or more) as necessary. Can use with either a basic unordered or ordered list. Best when list items are short phrases, as lengthier copy can be harder to read in columns.

Highlighted Text

We have an option to highlight sections of text with a light color mark. This can be used to draw attention to important information or data figures in the main body text as long as it’s used sparingly (too much can be distracting to readers). Think of this like using a highlighter pen in a book to mark passages that you find of interest. It should not be used solely for decorative purposes, as some screen readers announce marked text differently than regular paragraph or heading text elements.

Example: Consistency wisdom astringents speech brightness processes insomnia axon capture posttraumatic debriefing frostbite. Categorization determinism. Parasympathetic cognition arteries seizure observer. Functionalism abnormal. Volley nutrition agoraphobia apnea. Major covariation addiction biopsy? Psychoanalyst social genocide frenulum.

How to Become

How to Become a Psychiatric Nurse

  1. 1

    Earn Your Degree

The first step in becoming a psychiatric nurse is earning a nursing degree. Once you complete your nursing courses, nurses must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and apply for their nursing license through their state’s board of nursing.

You can earn a two-year associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a four-year bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). If you plan to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner, having a BSN gives you a broader range of options for continuing your education.

  2. 2

    Gain Experience

The second step is gaining nursing experience. Becoming a psychiatric nurse requires working with patients with mental health conditions.

If you are a new nursing graduate and aren’t working directly with psychiatric patients, keep track of the patients you’re caring for. Many may have underlying mental health conditions.

Note these patients and what you did to address their mental health. If you want to transfer to a psychiatric floor and become a psychiatric nurse, you can always refer to these patients during your interviewing process.

  3. 3

    Consider Certification

While you do not need certification to become a psychiatric nurse, certification can be advantageous in the job market or when seeking a promotion. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers the psychiatric-mental health nurse certification. You can also pursue specialized certifications from organizations like the Addictions Nursing Certification Board or the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation.

Nurse Featured Online RN-to-BSN Programs

NurseJournal asked Elizabeth Clarke, FNP, MSN, RN, MSSW to review each of the online RN-to-BSN programs below. In their review, they considered factors that influence nursing student experiences, including reputation, faculty, program quality, and value.

The following are the featured programs selected by Elizabeth Clarke, FNP, MSN, RN, MSSW.

1. Ohio State University-Main Campus

“OSU’s program is 100% online and asynchronous. This is a great option for RNs who works full-time and do not want to cut back to part-time or PRN to complete their RN-to-BSN program.

“OSU also offers a great selection of financial aid and scholarships. Rather than having students spend $500-1000 per semester, they offer online resources and provide textbooks to their students at no cost. This shows dedication to their students and an understanding that the RN-BSN student is a working professional who may not be able to afford additional costs on top of tuition.”

2. Lake-Sumter State College

“Lake-Sumter’s online RN-to-BSN program is one of the more affordable program available. The courses are only seven weeks long rather than an entire semester. This shows that the program supports working professionals as it guides them through the curriculum over a short period of time instead of prolonging the program over multiple semesters.”

3. Appalachian State University

“APP state provides helpful breakdowns of completion times for their RN-BSN program. The program can be completed in one, two, or three-years. The cost of tuition is fair, and they have many scholarship opportunities for different communities around Western North Carolina.

“It seems to be a program built for the working RN, and I like that they offer multiple program length options to provide RNs with greater flexibility.”
