The following article discusses the critical role Nursing Practice play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.

What We Do

Practice nurses begin at the registered nursing level, but have gained advanced training in healthcare services and medicine that other levels of nursing do not receive. They are more independent in their tasks than other nurses, but are not medical doctors and still require guidance and approval for many treatments. This position requires a standard state certification through most states, following the necessary national license that all nurses have. These nurses are trained extensively in pharmacology, ethics, methodology, and psychology as well as a number of other relevant course subjects that are suited to the chosen specialization.

Top 5 Tasks Performed

Practice nurses work at tasks such as teaching and training other nurses, prescribing medication and treating patients, working directly with patients in a more independent state than other nurses, designing and initiating plans of treatment, and acting as a liaison between families, patients, and other medical staff.

Work Environment

Nurse practitioners work in a variety of settings including nursing homes, hospitals, home healthcare, private practices, mental health facilities, addiction centers, and a number of other medically related institutions. Some may also work in colleges, or within hospital training settings to educate other nurses on practice and procedures.

How to Become

To become a practice nurse, or nurse practitioner, nurses must begin at the registered nursing level by completing a diploma, Associate degree or Bachelor of Science in nursing. This may take anywhere from 2-4 years and requires the passing of the national licensing examination for registered nurses. After this time, additional training and a Master of Science in nursing can be earned, after which post-secondary certification is required to move on into an advanced practical nurses position. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing changed the required level of education from a graduate level to a doctoral level by 2015, meaning that it will soon be mandatory to achieve higher academics in order to reach this position.

Job Outlook

The job outlook for this position shows a predicted growth rate of 31% according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is a much faster growth rate than other professions, even within the medical field, and it means that there will be many jobs available for nursing staff wishing to get into a practical or advanced practical positions. Advanced practical nurses have the opportunity to earn competition wages with the annual average of pay ranging around $94,460 or $46.37 per hour.

Training & Certification

Practice nurses and nurse practitioners must pass the NCLEX-RN national licensing examination, and complete extensive training before becoming a registered nurse, after which time continued education, training, and post-secondary certification that differ by state will lead nurses to the practical or advanced practical role.
