Nurse Leadership Careers & Salary Outlook

The following article discusses the critical role Nursing Leadership play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.

What We Do

Nursing leadership roles come in a variety of shapes, sizes and titles, and provide nurses with the ability to lead their fellow nurses through higher titles and responsibilities. Nursing leaders may work as managers and control nursing units within a large setting like a hospital. They may choose to work as care coordinators and help design and implement policies and treatments for patients. They may also choose to work as nursing directors and take charge of all the nurses in a particular medical facility. This role is typically a highly stressful one and requires a lot of responsibility within that chosen profession. Nursing leadership roles can require long hours and it may even be necessary to work after hours.

Top 5 Tasks Performed

Nursing leaders work at tasks like organizing nursing duties and responsibilities, educating nurses throughout extended training programs, designating codes and policies for nursing staff within a particular medical facility, creating schedules and maintaining their order among the nursing staff, and treating patients.

Work Environment

Nursing leadership can be found at all nursing stations including hospitals, military settings, government positions, community and public health roles, private clinics, nursing homes, and anywhere else that nursing staff may require leadership and management.

How to Become

Most nursing leadership roles require a basic education beginning with a college diploma, Associate degree, or Bachelor of Science in nursing, followed by the passing of the NCLEX-RN national license examination. This will prepare students to act as registered nurses and gain experience in their chosen field. After gaining some experience, nurses may choose to attend school once more and earn a Master of Science in nursing degree, or a Ph.D. in their specialization. This allows nurses to take higher certifications and licensing examinations that may be necessary for management positions.

Job Outlook

There is a 23% growth prediction for the job outlook of nursing leadership and management positions across the United States. This is a higher than normal growth and provides many job opportunities for nurses who are looking to exceed their current level or position within their chosen field of practice. The pay for nursing leaders varies, but the average rate of pay per year is $88,580, which is roughly $42,59 per hour.

Training & Certification

The national licensing examination must be passed to reach registered nursing status, after which additional training, experience and further certification are necessary.
