Respiratory Nursing Careers & Salary Outlook

The following article discusses the critical role Respiratory Nursing play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.

What We Do

Respiratory therapists and respiratory nurses work within hospital settings and other medical facilities to assist patients that are undergoing treatment for respiratory problems. They may also help in the diagnosis of patients who are having breathing problems, but who have no current respiratory diagnosis or treatment under way. Asthma, emphysema, and other chronic illnesses may be treated, along with symptoms displayed by newborns with under-developed lungs, or elderly patients who have other forms of lung disease or weakness in their lungs. Respiratory nurses perform emergency procedures on patients who have suffered from heart attacks or shock. They may also treat patients who are victims of drowning.

Top 5 Tasks Performed

Respiratory therapists and respiratory nurses interview patients on symptoms and previous diagnoses, perform diagnostic testing, monitor patients during treatment, record patient progress and manage other records, and supervise therapeutic technicians.

Work Environment

Most respiratory nurses will work in hospital settings, although some might choose to work in private clinics, the public health sector, military or government facilities, or other medical institutions. This area of focus can be mentally stressful as some respiratory illnesses are chronic, and others are life threatening and can place patients in critical condition within seconds.

How to Become

To become a respiratory nurse, students must complete an associate degree or a Bachelor degree. Students who are seeking employment through the military may take an Armed Forces training program rather than a university course, and some other medical facilities may only require a diploma from a vocational school. During this training, students are required to complete a clinical period with hands on training as well as in class learning. Courses include subjects like cardiopulmonary resuscitation, patient assessment, testing, anatomy, pharmacology, and chemistry. Following graduation, therapists must gain certification through the National Board of Respiratory Care.

Job Outlook

The job outlook for respiratory nurses and respiratory therapists indicates a growth rate of 19% as predicted by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is a faster than average growth rate for a career path within the United States and provides a competitive salary and lots of room for advancement. Respiratory therapists make on average $55,870 per year or $26.86 per hour.

Respiratory nurses and therapists must be registered in all states except for Alaska. This certification is gained through the National Board for Respiratory Care and includes either Registered Respiratory Therapist certification or Certified Respiratory Therapist certification.
