Top Delaware Nursing Schools, Colleges & Degree Programs
There is a nursing shortage of between 1,300 and 3,000 nurses in the state of Delaware at the moment. This shortage is not as acute as it is in many other parts of the country, but nevertheless it is still a problem that requires a solution. This is also clearly shown in overall labor statistics, which indicate that while unemployment rates are declining in the state overall, the number of vacancies within the healthcare field have barely changed.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics national demand for nurses is set to grow by around 19% over the next 10 years. Salary expectations are believed to grow in line with this. Delaware is no different. The reasons for this expected growth are vast. First, there is the aging workforce, with many of the current nurses being over the age of 55, and some even over the age of 65. Additionally, the population of Delaware is growing, which exacerbates the need for nurses. Due to the healthcare reforms, demand on nurses has increased as well and the actual needs of the population have changed in line with the obesity epidemic and other health issues. Worryingly, there are nine health professional shortage areas in Delaware and 93.75% of the population live in these areas.
The current median salary for registered nurses in the state stands at $58,000, which is well below the national average. This does not make the state overly attractive as a place of employment. Additionally, 407 qualified students were refused enrollment in schools and colleges because there were not sufficient faculty staff available. Indeed, the demand for Nurse Educators is one of the highest in the state itself. The highest paid nursing role in the state is that of the Clinical Nurse Manager and the lowest is the Psychiatric Nurse and the Outpatient Oncology Nurse.
Just like in the other states, the highest demand is for those nurses with at least a bachelor’s education and, preferably, master’s degrees. Some of the efforts that are being implemented by state and federal government include supporting and encouraging employers to put their current nursing staff through further education. However, with the shortage of nurse educators, this can be hard to achieve. As such, those who do wish to work in the field of nursing in this state may want to consider a career as a nurse educator.
