Ambulatory Care Nurse Careers & Salary Outlook

The following article discusses the critical role Ambulatory Care Nursing play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.

What We Do

Ambulatory care nurses work in outpatient roles and usually attend a high number of patients throughout a short time period. This rapid treatment style includes assessing and educating patients, families, and sometimes other nurses. An ACN cares for all types of patients from geriatrics to addiction care. They also treat pain and many other issues at a fast pace, making them indispensable to their units. Other nurses within this line of work will focus on research, education, direct practice, administration, and other specializations in the ACN profession.

Top 5 Tasks Performed

An ambulatory nurse works outside of a hospital and cares mostly for patients under duress from pain. Pain management, health education, medical screenings, case management, and triage are all performed during this time.

Work Environment

Ambulatory care nurses may work in offices, primary care settings, community health centers, ambulatory surgeries, within the educational system, as an occupational health nurse, school nurse; or even doing home care. The main workplace setting for an ACN can be in nearly any outside health facility, but they are rarely seen in hospitals.

How to Become

To become an ambulatory care nurse, or ACN, you must first become qualified as a registered nurse. This means obtaining either a diploma from a 3 year hospital training program, an associate degree from a 2 year college program, or a bachelor degree from a 4 year university course. Once schooling has been completed with a qualifying GPA, students must go on to gain two years of experience as a register nurse and log two thousand clinical hours along with thirty extra hours of academics and pass the Ambulatory Care Nurse Certification Examination.

Job Outlook

Registered nurses will see a faster than average growth over the following decade as the position rises in number by 19% by 2022. This includes new positions, particularly in regions where there are nursing shortages. The number of areas in which registered nurses can specialize, such as ambulatory care, leave a multitude of positions available for those with the appropriate education and certification.

Training & Certification

In order to become certified as a registered nurse, students must first pass the National Council Licensing Examination – RN, and then after the appropriate number of practical hours of work are obtained, a passing grade must be met for the Ambulatory Care Nurse Certification Examination.

Min Education Requirements

Associates, Bachelors, Some College

Sample of Reported Job Titles

Surgical Specialty Clinic Care, Director of Perioperative Services and Ambulatory Care, Ambulatory Quality Nurse, Case Manager Care Coordinator, Nurse Educator
