Critical Care Nurse Careers & Salary Outlook

The following article discusses the critical role Critical Care Nursing play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.

What We Do

A critical care nurse holds very similar educational standards as a registered nurse, and can work in all of the same fields as an RN but has additional and advanced training within a few life-saving categories. This field of nursing focuses on high risk injuries and illnesses that require immediate and intensive care. This can mean assisting with transfusion, emergency surgery, and defibrillation under the supervision and direction of an attending medical doctor. These nurses have advanced training to compose themselves in situations that other nurses may not be able to handle. This position can be high stress, but also includes great emotional and mental rewards, which is why this specialization has become such a popular role in the nursing industry. There is a large calling for nurses of this stature, as emergency situations are something that will always occur, and critical care will always be required in some form or another, making it impossible for this line of work to cease.

Top 5 Tasks Performed

A critical care nurse can be expected to work with more intensive caseloads, performing tasks such as attending to serious wounds, monitoring life support, documenting interactions and medications, attending equipment utilized in the monitoring of life support, and assessment of conditions of patients.

Work Environment

Critical care nurses can be found within continuing care facilities, private practices and other medical institutions, but the most frequented place for this occupation is a hospital. Within the hospital, critical care nurses can be sought out through the ICU or intensive care unit, as well as the emergency room. Attending to major injuries and illnesses that require immediate attention are the main duties involved in this line of work.

How to Become

Critical care nurses will follow the same educational path as registered nurses in completing a hospital training diploma over a 3 year period, an Associate level degree in 2 years, or a Baccalaureate in 4 years. Professionals working within this specialization will find easier access to jobs with additional training at the graduate level, but there are no specific requirements above and beyond the RN level for roles within the critical nursing position. The only main difference that a critical care nurse and an average registered nurse will find is that oftentimes a critical care nurse has an advantage in emergency situation training due to a few additional skills that must be achieved.

Job Outlook

The field of critical care nurses should expect a boom of growth between now and 2020 of approximately 26%, which is considered to be much higher than the average rate of growth for most other positions across the country. Employment within the field of registered nurses is expecting growth of 19%, so this additional training and certification will increase chances of a position within the nursing field.

Training & Certification

Critical care nurses must have passed the NCLEX-RN, which is a national licensing examination required of all nurses training to become registered nurses within the United States. In addition to this examination, Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support is also necessary, as well as Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Not all states require the same certification within this specialization, but nurses will find it much easier to find work with additional training and credentials.

Min Education Requirements

Some College, Bachelors, Associates
