The following article discusses the critical role Adult Health Nursing play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.
What We Do
An adult nurse practitioner works with adults of varying ages, who suffer from acute and chronic injuries or diseases. Many work to support recovery, while others create long-term care plans for patients who may not have hope of a full recovery. Assessing and treating patients through a variety of methods and keeping patients comfortable and safe whether they’re being treated, are the top priorities of an ANP. Most nurses work within a larger team of medical personnel, but in the case of adult practitioner nurses they may work one on one with the patient at all times, aside from passing on duties to relief nurses at home time. Some ANPs work as live in nurses for a time with their patients as well.
Top 5 Tasks Performed
Creating patient care plans, Observing and recording conditions as they worsen or become better, Caring for patients through drips, transfusions and medication, Educating patients about their health and possible health solutions and options, Assisting doctor’s with tests and diagnosis.
Work Environment
Most adult nurse practitioners work in hospitals, but some may work in community health centers, continuing care facilities, residential homes, special units within medical facilities and hospices. Although there are many in-patient nurses of this genre, some nurses choose to work in people’s homes so that they’re more comfortable and surrounded by familiarity during treatment or monitoring.
How to Become
An adult nurse practitioner must be qualified as an RN before specializing. This means an associate or bachelor degree in most states, although some states will allow a 3 year diploma earned through a hospital training program. After this a graduate program may be taken up, or some states will allow for certification as an ANP through the state nursing board. All RNs must also take the NCLEX-RN and continue to maintain and renew licensing.
Job Outlook
The growth rate for all registered nurses, including adult health practitioners shows a faster than average growth rate of between 19% and 26% by the year 2022. The median amount earned per year for a nurse practitioner is $89,960.
Training & Certification
In order to work in the field of adult health nursing, students must gain certification through the ANCC for specialty in an ANP specialty like general adult health, gerontology or mental health. The national licensing examination must also be passed in order to obtain permission to work as a registered nurse within the United States.
